Diwali Wishes and Greetings

Diwali – the Festival of Lights – is one of the Hindu religion’s most popular and well-known events.

Around the world, Indian communities put on public light displays and engage in festivities that everyone is able to enjoy. Sometimes these celebrations involve illuminations – strings of lights hung across streets and homes. Sometimes there are fireworks displays outside, and inside the home there are candles or oil burning lamps.

All these sparkly images are great inspiration for Happy Diwali cards that are traditionally exchanged at this time of year. Homemade Diwali cards containing personalized Diwali messages are a great way to get your kids involved in some messy craft activities! Instructions for this Special Diwali Greeting Card
This card is a great way for your little ones to be creative this Diwali! Some of these steps might be difficult for younger children, but you can always assist them.

Fold a sheet of black card in half to form the base of the card, folding left to right.

Draw two teardrop shapes on a sheet of white paper: a larger one to represent the lamp; a smaller one to represent the flame.

Use the larger teardrop shape as a template: draw around it and cut out three lamp shapes from the patterned paper.

Use the flame shape as a template to create three red, three orange, and one yellow flame shape from the tissue paper.

Lay the flame template at the top left hand corner of the page and draw around it, being sure to leave a gap between the top of the template and the top of the card.

Glue the first of the lamp shapes below the drawn flame, then glue the remaining two lamp shapes in position, following the example of the picture above.

Again take the flame template and place it above the second lamp, below and to the right. Draw around it.

Use a craft knife to cut out the two flame-shaped windows from the card.

Now overlay and glue, in a staggered effect, three sets of red and orange tissue paper shapes – see the photograph below (red represents the hottest part of the flame, orange the middle).

For each of the windows, glue one of the two sets of tissue paper to the back, positioned so that the red tissue faces the front and only a small part of the top is showing.

Cut a square of yellow tissue large enough to glue across the whole of the back of the window. Fix it in place, and then turn the card over and you’ll see you’ve created two flickering flames.

With the final set of red and orange tissue paper, glue the yellow tissue paper shape to the back. Use this yellow shape as a guide, cutting around it to remove the excess tissue paper. Glue it in place above the third lamp.


Decorate around the lamps as much as you like, and don’t forget to include a line or two of Diwali greetings inside your card – we’ve put together a few below that you could use.
